She is a proven world cruiser with a small race boat feel at the helm that was commissioned by a German businessman who travelled the world on her for two years accompanied by his family. Every detail aboard the 39.8m (130ft) luxury yacht reflects this purpose. Designed by Bill Tripp and built of lightweight Alustar aluminum by Abeking & Rasmussen, ALITHIA is an open book of remarkable visual simplicity, but an equally remarkable complexity lies beneath the surface.
Andrew Winch designed her simple interior of light Canadian maple veneer over aluminum honeycomb coring with a minimalistic theme incorporating stunning furniture and cabinetry. Flexible guest accommodation consists of four ensuite staterooms: a master suite, two double staterooms and a library that can be converted into an additional double stateroom.
The upper and lower salons feel positively palatial, lit by acres of glass around the raised salon and two large hatches in the overhead. Even at night, the light joinery work and neutral fabrics will glow under the indirect lighting. One of the designer’s goals was to create an exceptional view from the dining and lounge areas in the house – a feeling of being outside – and they’ve done this by extending the bottom of the windows to deck level.
Crew quarters and galley occupy the forward third of the interior. Her galley is large and has enough cold storage to last for the longest passage the yacht likely will make.
Everything that isn’t being used hides behind a closed door or electrically operated panel. A touch of a button at the nav station calls up two flat-screen displays for navigation and ship’s monitoring. A hinged desktop opens onto the instruments, and all of the communication devices are behind a closed door or inside a drawer.
ALITHIA’s appearance flaunts a short but lovely counter stern and a vertical stem that extends the waterlines and allows her to reach top speeds. ALITHIA’s bow chisels through the surface chop and lifts over the swells, upwind or down. All of ALITHIA’s sail controls are hydraulic, involving eight captive-reel winches, rams and electronic command modules. Keeping with the minimalist theme, all of the running rigging passes through tunnels between the false deck and the structural deck below.
