Although the Caribbean has been a perennial charter destination on the superyacht circuit for decades, it continues to draw exciting charter yachts year after year – and deservedly so.
Whether you are seeking the solitude of the Exumas chain in the Bahamas or fancy partying the night away in the late-night bars of Antigua’s English Harbour, there’s a charter that is right for you.
Here are some ideas to inspire your next trip, perhaps over the coming holiday season.
BAHAMAS
Boasting 700 idyllic islands, the Bahamas is one of the most popular destinations for a Caribbean yacht charter. On New Providence, golf fans can head over to the Albany course, which is regularly frequented by owner-investor Tiger Woods. The One&Only Ocean Club with its classic colonial style is recognisable for the early scenes of Casino Royale.
A yacht charter in the Bahamas wouldn’t be complete without a trip to the clear blue waters of the Exumas. Dive in the Angelfish Blue Hole, head to Big Major Cay to swim with pigs, or snorkel in 007’s Thunderball Grotto. Then head to the Staniel Cay Yacht Club for a legendary frozen piña colada and cracked conch.
Day trips by sea plane can take you to Cat Cay for some excellent Atlantic surfing, or to Pink Sands Beach on relaxed but refined Harbour Island.
BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS
The BVIs, including four main islands, combine superb underwater wildlife for diving and snorkelling with fun nightlife and restaurants.
As a regular haunt for many of the sailing superyachts in the region, the BVIs hosts a number of regattas over the Caribbean high season. The Loro Piana Caribbean Superyacht Regatta and Rendezvous – also popular with motoryachts in the vicinity – is a big attraction for many yacht owners. It is hosted at the upscale Yacht Club Costa Smerelda on Virgin Gorda each March.
The resort on Peter Island is popular for a spot of spa indulgence, or head to Sir Richard Branson’s Necker Island, which has its own lemur park and zip line. The Willy-T, a legendary floating bar and restaurant near Norman Island, is a great spot to head for a relaxed partying atmosphere where the drinks will surely be flowing while the Caribbean beats carry on well into the night.
ST BARTHS, ANTIGUA, ANGUILLA & ST KITTS
St Barths is known for its luxury boutiques, gourmet restaurants and huge New Year’s fireworks display. It’s the place to see and be seen over Christmas and New Year’s. For sporty types, it’s popular with surfers, too.
Antigua has an old-school charm, with an authentic sailing heart. Enjoy the fun bars and cafes of English Harbour, or head up to Shirley Heights to watch the infamous ‘green flash’ at sunset (rum punch in hand).
Anguilla is considered by some as the region’s best kept secret. It is a relaxing and calm spot from which to enjoy the natural beauty of the Caribbean. Enjoy scuba diving, world class spas and award-winning dining.
St Kitts is becoming more popular on the luxury travel circuit, with a new resort and marina at Christophe Harbour (plus Tom Fazio championship golf course), as well as a new private jet terminal.
BERMUDA
In 2017, the action of the 35th America’s Cup will be heading to Bermuda to combine the sailing drama with this unique colonial outpost, which combines a distinctive blend of British and American culture.
Steeped in history, as well as natural wonders, Bermuda will be putting on a special show as the world’s eyes turn to this pocket-sized Atlantic Island, with teams battling it out for the oldest trophy in international sport. Now is a fantastic time to explore the area, before the crowds arrive to Great Sound.
Apart from the sailing, fans of diving can explore the various underwater wrecks and natural sea life, while those who fancy staying above the water’s surface can head to the fascinating water-lined underground caves complete with bright, white stalactites. Visit the Royal Naval Dockyard to take in attractions like the interactive Dolphin Quest or absorb the maritime history at the National Museum of Bermuda.
